Brighter back lanes cost RM2 a month

THE Petaling Jaya City Council (MBPJ) has received 23 applications as of April 30 from houseowners to have LED lights fitted to their back lanes.
Petaling Jaya mayor Datin Paduka Alinah Ahmad said last year, there were 56 applications. She hopes more residents will take advantage of the free installation of LED lights to deter crime.
Alinah added that MBPJ contractors will install the LED tube lights and the houseowner would have to pay the RM2 monthly electricity bill to Tenaga Nasional.
“The light-emitting diode (LED) lights are more suitable as they are brighter. It will also save the residents’ money because it is energy efficient and the tubes have a longer lifespan,” she added.
Former All Petaling Jaya Selangor Residents Association Coalition (Apac) adviser Mohamed Umar Peer Mohamed urged the council to absorb the RM2 cost.
“Electricity tariffs have also gone up and MBPJ should not put extra pressure on senior citizens living in Petaling Jaya,” he said.
If the LED lights are turned on for 12 hours a day over a year, the bill will be RM17.77 compared to ordinary fluorescent lights which would cost RM58.77.
A total of RM50,000 has been allocated every year for this programme which began in 2011. This year, another RM50,000 has been allocated.
Two of the earliest neighbourhoods that had the LED lights installed in 2011 were sections 5 and 52.
In 2012, the programme included Jalan Templer, SS2, SS8, SS9, PJU10, Sri Damansara and Taman Aman. For 2013, the areas were Section 17, Section 20, PJS3, Section 51 and PPRT Lembah Subang.
